Swedish, or Svenska, is a Scandinavian language spoken by about ten million people and is similar to Norwegian and Danish. It is spoken mainly in Sweden, and parts of coastal Finland. It is written in Latin (Roman) letters. The authorised Bible (Bibel) was first produced in Swedish in 1541, revised in 1618, 1703 and 1917. Many editions include the books of the Apocrypha, in the Lutheran tradition. Most Swedish speaking Christians are Evangelical Lutheran Protestants. Bible work is done by the Swedish Bible Society (Svenska Bibelsällskapet), who produced a new version called Bibel 2000. Bibles are produced in editions with or without the Apocrypha.
